Two Signature doctors chosen to participate in NCQA Spine Program

Signature Medical Group is pleased to announce that physicians Thomas Lieb, M.D, and Daniel Sohn, M.D., have been granted “Recognition” status by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for their participation in the Back Pain Recognition Program (BPRP). Drs. Lieb and Sohn are two of only three physicians in eastern Missouri to be granted “Recognition” status.

The BPRP recognizes physicians who deliver superior care to millions of Americans who suffer from low back pain. The BPRP consists of 13 clinical measures and three structural standards such as the elements of the physical exam and advice for the return to normal activities. These requirements address the broad spectrum of low back pain and focus on underuse, misuse and overuse of treatment modalities. Drs. Lieb and Sohn have been found to adhere to these requirements.

Back pain is among the most common ailments in America. Each year, nearly 1 in 9 Americans experience pain severe enough to impair their usual daily activities. Treatment costs total approximately $91 billion a year and accounts for 25 percent of all workers’ compensation claims. The BPRP is the first independent effort to systematically evaluate back pain care.

Drs. Lieb and Sohn along with Kymberly Gomez, PA-C, have worked to incorporate a specific clinical protocol into each patient interaction, thereby meeting NCQA requirements for the BPRP.

“We are extremely pleased that two of our physicians meet the criteria for this leading-edge program,” noted Jan Vest, CEO of Signature Medical Group. “This is an excellent example of how the more conservative, cost-conscious practice patterns of our doctors can benefit our patients.”
